WAKE UP SUSI CAMPAIGN

For nearlya year now, thepreviousand currentStudent Union have been working tirelessly to end the discrimination with theeligibility for non-state funded collegestudents looking to apply for the SUSI grant. Kim Jennings (formerStudent Union president)along with our previousSUhave represented our students in numerous events and havemade a substantialimpact in highlightingthe discrimination in the education sector. Emma O'Sullivan (current SU President),James Roberts (Current VP of the SU) andthe rest of our team have successfully continued on withthis campaign to reach government level.

On the13th of October, our Student Union along with Griffith College SU and ICHAS have met with Committee on Education and Skills to discuss the campaign whichwas aired on Oireachtas TV (See link below). During their meetingour guys highlightedthe current discrimination for non-state funded collegestudents looking to apply for the SUSI grant. The committee acknowledged this issue and wereempathetictowards the students and their powerful stories. Many of these studentsnot onlydeserve the SUSI grant but arealso eligible for the maintenance and registration grants too, which could be vital for any studentstudying in Higher Education.

The meeting ended very well withthe Committee on Education and Skills beingmore than pleased with the professionalism and dignity in which the campaign was executed by all parties. They were also impressed with the hard-work that was put in by our students to get this campaignto where it is now. Overall the committee agree that there is a currentinjustice in our current grant system to eligible students.

We hope to have your full support in this campaign and well done to our Student Union for their enthusiasm and never-endingeffort with representing our student body!
