DBS LAW SOCIETY – THE IRISH TIMES DEBATING COMPETITION

The DBS Law Society had the privilege of hosting the first round of the Irish Times Debating Competition on the evening of Tuesday the 7th Of November. Colleges from all over Dublin and Ireland attended the event In the Aungier street campus. We also had the honour of the Army Cadet School participating.

The event commenced at 7pm and ran until 9:30pm. We had two debates running throughout the night.
The motions were:
“This House Would Boycott Russia 2018”
“This House Believes Women Will Not Achieve Equality Until Mandatory Equal Paternity Leave Exists”

We had 8 teams arguing each motion, split into the proposition and Opposition. DBS had two teams representing the College. Prebi Olobio and Anwesha Mukherjee were Opposing “This House Would Boycott Russia 2018”, while David O’Connor and Susan Mooney were Proposing “This House Bellieves Women Will Not Achieve Equality Until Mandatory Equal Paternity Leave Exists”. All Contestants gave a great account of themselves, even with very little experience in Debating.

We would like to congratulate all teams that advanced to the next round and all individual wild cards. A huge congratulations to our own David O’Connor who was picked as a wild card and has now advanced to the next round.

Thanks to the teams from UCD, TCD, NUIG, Griffith College, DIT, LSDSI and Cadet School for participating and to everyone who came down to watch, making the event a night to remember (or not if you attend Nolita’s afterwards).
A big thanks to The Irish Times for giving us the opportunity for letting us host such a prestigious event.
