We are all different and yet the same

Have you ever heard of the term sense of belonging? The need to belong – or belongingness – is what brings people together. It is, by definition, the human emotional urge to identify with and be valued by individuals and groups. Belongingness also plays a very important role in DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). More than just creating a diverse and inclusive environment at college, it is important to understand how the students are feeling, if they feel valued and, most importantly, if they feel they should be there.

It is not enough to just invite everyone to the table; we must also enhance everybody`s voice by recognizing and appreciating each other's diverse and unique backgrounds. A recent study called “Emotional Intelligence, Belongingness, and Mental Health in College Students” shows that there is a correlation between sense of belonging, increased happiness, and actual well-being. Social anxiety, loneliness or depression can also be decreased by belongingness.

To make sure to create an environment where students feel truly welcomed and part of the community, DBS has all the initiatives led by Student Union, clubs, and societies. The DEI Hub is here as well to show the students that, no matter where we come from, our similarities and differences bring us together.

If you have just started your journey at DBS (or even have been here for a long time) and would like to increase your sense of belonging, here goes a few tips:

Be curious and make an effort! It is important that you put yourself out there and get involved with people and groups with whom you have similar interests. DBS has a variety of clubs and societies students can take part in.

Be open to other cultures! If you practice acceptance, you will see the world from another perspective. By focusing on similarities instead of differences we can learn from others and remain open to new ways of thinking. You will see that, even being from different backgrounds, similarity brings us together.

The first 100 days of college means a lot! Get yourself involved in the events as much as you can.

And just remember: It might take a bit of time until you feel you truly belong to a new place or group, but it is completely worth the effort. Don’t be so hard on yourself!
