PRIDE month - June 2024

by Hamza Razaq | Jun 11, 2024
In Ireland, the history of Pride and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights has been a long and challenging one. Prior to 1993, sexual activity between men was criminalized under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act and the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act, regardless of whether it was consensual or not. Sexual activity between women was not legally outlawed but was also completely unacceptable across society, religion and politics.

First Held 27 June 1974
Frequency - Annually, on the last Saturday in June
Significance - The largest LGBTQ+ pride festival on the island of Ireland.

Since then, Ireland has made significant progress in LGBTQ+ rights. In 2015, Ireland became the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. The Dublin LGBTQ+ Pride Festival has grown from a one-day event in 1974 to a ten-day festival celebrating LGBTQ+ culture in Ireland with an expanded arts, social and cultural content.
