We are now six weeks into the semester and we hope you have enjoyed the term so far. If you are planning to get a headstart on assignments and exams over the reading week, check out our blog below with some of our top tips for studying!
1. Use DBS Resources!
SESU workshops are a helpful way to expand on what you know or learn new skills. The SESU workshops include:
-
Academic Writing
-
Numerical Skills
-
Digital IT Skills
All classes can be signed up on the booking system & are online, available through here
The Library offers 1-1 consultation here and be sure to make a booking for a group study room here.
2. Make a plan
It’s vital that you take the time to write out what you need to study and decide when you will cover each topic. By breaking the section down into smaller sections will make studying easier and ensure that you are being as productive as you can. You can also keep track of which subjects you have covered and which ones may need more attention.
3. Take Breaks
As important as studying is, it is more important that you are looking after yourselves. Take plenty of breaks between study sessions, try to go for a walk and get some fresh air to clear your head. This will make a huge difference for you when studying and give you the much-needed headspace. See what’s happening around Dublin here, a highlight of the year for the city is always the Dublin by Night Fest!
4. Study Techniques
Make sure that you use the method that works for you. There are plenty of ones available but here are a few to keep in mind:
Flashcards: These can be a great tool to memorise key terms and definitions as you can test yourself. It can especially be helpful when you use different colour cards for different subjects.
Mind Maps: Writing out a topic in the centre of a page and then creating a mind-map of everything you recall on the topic is an excellent way to engage your brain and test your memory.
Be the teacher: Grab a friend and try to teach them a subject that you are studying, if your “student” is able to understand the topic well, that will show that your own understanding is thorough and well-tested.
Record yourself: This can be a great method for when you are out and about. You can choose a topic, record yourself speaking about what you understand and then listen back to it. You can also make note of what information you may have missed.
5. Do your Best!
Remember that what you put into your studying efforts will reflect in your results. Set your own personal goals to work towards and do not compare yourself to anyone else. All you can do is your best so give it your best effort and it will all work out.
