Welcome to the Year of the Snake: Happy Chinese New Year 2025! 🐍🎉

As we step into February, we want to take a moment to wish all our Chinese students and friends a Happy Chinese New Year 2025! May this year bring you happiness, success, and prosperity.

This year, we welcome the Year of the Snake, a symbol of wisdom, intuition, and transformation in the Chinese zodiac. For those celebrating, this is a time of joy, family reunions, and traditions that date back thousands of years. Even if you’re not familiar with the holiday, Chinese New Year is a fantastic opportunity to learn about another culture and join in the festivities!

What is Chinese New Year?

Also known as the Spring Festival (Chūn Jié), Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. Unlike January 1st on the Western calendar, the date of Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar and falls between late January and mid-February. In 2025, it begins on January 29th and lasts for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival.

The holiday is deeply rooted in family, tradition, and renewal, marking a fresh start for the new year. It is a time to honor ancestors, gather with loved ones, and set hopes for a prosperous future.

How is Chinese New Year Celebrated?

Throughout China and in Chinese communities worldwide, the New Year is celebrated with exciting traditions, including:

🔴 Reunion Dinners – Families come together for a special feast on New Year's Eve, featuring symbolic dishes like dumplings (for wealth) and fish (for abundance).

💰 Red Envelopes ( Hóngbāo) – Elders give red envelopes filled with money to children and young adults as a blessing for good fortune.

🎆 Fireworks & Lion Dances – Firecrackers and fireworks light up the sky to ward off bad luck, while lion and dragon dances bring good energy to the new year.

🧹 Spring Cleaning & Decorations – Homes are cleaned before the new year to sweep away bad luck, and red decorations with messages of good fortune are placed around the house.

🕯️ The Lantern Festival – On the 15th and final day, glowing red lanterns are released into the sky, symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

Join the Celebration!

If you are looking to take part in the festivities, here are some ways you can celebrate:

  • Try traditional Chinese food – Try dumplings, spring rolls, or sweet glutinous rice balls (tāngyuán) to embrace the flavors of the holiday. There is a market very close to DBS Castle House.

  • Wish your friends a Happy New Year – Say (Xīn Nián Kuài Lè!)" which means "Happy New Year!" or  (Gōng Xǐ Fā Cái!)" meaning "Wishing you prosperity!"
